OCS 2021 Exhibition
To celebrate our centenary in 2021, the Society is holding an important exhibition, Collectors, Connoisseurs, Curators: A Century of the Oriental Ceramic Society. It will be held at the Brunei Gallery, SOAS, London University, from 15th October to 11th December 2021.
The exhibition will tell the story of the Society’s journey from a private group of twelve connoisseurs and collectors in London in 1921, to being an international membership society today. It will reflect the role and legacy of the collector, and document changes in collecting taste and scholarship over the century.
We have selected over 100 objects, mostly but not exclusively Chinese, including ceramics and other materials. About 40 UK museum pieces with a provenance in past OCS members’ collections have been included, as well as 60 from current members. A fully illustrated catalogue will be published for the exhibition, edited by Sarah Wong, with expert thematic essays by Dr Stacey Pierson, Dr Frances Wood and Professor Nigel Wood.
The exhibition will also be used for teaching Chinese art, curating and museum studies, alongside an extensive education programme aimed at OCS members, students and the public, with gallery talks and an academic conference in November 2021.
